Kenyan Soapstone Carving.
For hundreds of years the Kisii people have carved the soapstone found in the rolling hills near Lake Victoria. Carvings ranged from such mundane items as pots for carrying fat to massage as skin protection from the sun and wind to figurines revered as holding the spirit of their ancestors. Since then, the carvings have been modernized, but the process has remained the same. A carver sits with a simple piece of metal tied to a stick and, from a crude chunk of soapstone, creates a masterpiece. Each of these items includes an educational tag regarding Kisii carving.
